In the industry, fluorinating primarily takes two routes. It either goes through direct fluorinating or through the use of Hydrogen fluoride. Direct fluorinating, such as DASAT, MFn, CF3OF, very often involves very volatile reaction, low selectivity, high cost, potential toxicity, and difficulty in separating byproducts from products.
Fluorinating through Hydrogen fluoride relies on very expensive catalysts despite still fairly low yield. The use of HF gas easily leaves to dangerous reactions and high cost too.
